What is the AFOQT Math Knowledge subtest?

Math Knowledge tests mathematical concepts and procedures — the "do you know the math" subtest, as opposed to word problems. On the official AFOQT it has 25 questions in 22 minutes (about 53 seconds per question), and it contributes to the Pilot composite (and the quantitative composites).

What it covers

Core high-school math: algebra (equations, exponents, factoring), geometry (area, perimeter, volume, angles, the Pythagorean theorem), fractions, ratios and percentages, number properties, and basic coordinate geometry. Our exercises develop concept knowledge and hand computation.

Timing

About 53 seconds per question is generous compared to the speeded subtests, and clean hand computation can help you use that time efficiently.

How to improve

  • Memorize the handful of formulas that recur (areas/volumes, Pythagorean theorem, slope, exponent rules) so you're not deriving them under time.
  • Practice mental and written arithmetic to build calculation fluency.
  • When stuck, plug in the answer choices or estimate to eliminate — it's faster than a full solve.
  • Review each miss to the concept, and re-drill that concept, rather than moving on.

Common mistakes

  • Formula slips (confusing area vs. circumference, or exponent rules).
  • Arithmetic errors from rushing when there was actually time.
  • Under-practicing hand computation, estimation, and simplification.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions is AFOQT Math Knowledge?
The official subtest has 25 questions with a 22-minute limit.
Can I use a calculator?
Our no-calculator drill is a training condition, not an exam-policy claim. The Pearson VUE AFOQT page and the Air Force practice pamphlet reviewed do not state a calculator rule for current AFOQT appointments. Calculator policy remains unverified; confirm it with your test control officer or testing provider. Scratch materials are addressed separately below. The Air Force practice pamphlet describes supplied scratch paper alongside pencil-and-answer-sheet procedures (page 4). That statement does not verify the materials supplied at a current computer-based appointment. Policy sources checked: 2026-10-10.

What topics are tested?
Algebra, geometry, arithmetic, fractions/ratios/percentages, and number properties.
Does it count for pilot?
Yes — Math Knowledge feeds the Pilot composite and the quantitative composites.

What AFOQT Lab offers (our practice set — honest)

AFOQT Lab's Math Knowledge set is 50 original practice questions with worked, step-by-step solutions, verified for correctness, on a live timer with instant scoring. (Note: the real exam presents 25 questions; our 50-question bank is a study set, not a claim about exam length.)
