EXAM PREPARATION
Are Calculators Allowed on the AFOQT? What Official Sources Say
We could not verify a current AFOQT calculator rule in the official sources we could read. As a study strategy, prepare without relying on a calculator; this is not a statement of exam policy. Confirm the rules for your appointment with your recruiter, test control officer, or Pearson VUE.
Some third-party prep sites advise against bringing a calculator, but we did not find that wording in the official sources checked; we treat this claim as unverified.
What we checked
Personal calculators, tools supplied by the test center, and on-screen tools are separate questions. None is settled by a general instruction about scratch paper.
| Source | Date checked | What it says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pearson VUE AFOQT page | The page lists subtests, scheduling and eligibility guidance, identification requirements, and AFOQT contact details. Its displayed update date is 2026-08-06. | No calculator rule or scratch-material instructions were found on this page. That absence does not establish a rule for your appointment. | |
| U.S. Air Force AFOQT information pamphlet | Printed page 4 (the fifth PDF page) describes pencil answers on a separate answer sheet and supplied scratch paper for calculations. This is an older paper-and-pencil description, not current computer-based guidance. | A search of the complete 27-page text found no occurrence of “calculator.” The scratch-paper statement does not establish current computer-based calculator or scratch-material rules. | |
| AFROTC Academic Standards | The page explains AFOQT attempt limits and retest intervals for cadets. | Our review of this page found no mention of calculators. This does not establish a calculator rule for your appointment. |
What this means for preparation
Prepare as though you will need to solve the math without a calculator. This is a precaution, not a verified exam restriction: if no calculator is available at your appointment, you will have practiced the necessary methods; if your testing provider confirms a tool is available, those methods are still useful.
Our no-calculator practice is a training condition, not an official test-day restriction. Work on estimation, fraction simplification, percentages, and checking units before increasing your pace.
- No-Calculator speed training — rehearse hand computation under a clock.
- Math Knowledge practice — review the mathematical relationship before working faster.
- Arithmetic Reasoning practice — turn word problems into equations and check the units.
- Math formula sheet with worked examples — understand when each formula applies.
How to confirm your appointment rules
- Ask your recruiter or test control officer about your specific test location and delivery format.
- Read your appointment confirmation email and the Pearson VUE instructions linked for your exam. Check for instructions about personal devices, supplied tools, and scratch materials.
- Use Pearson VUE’s official customer-service page, which directs exam-specific questions to the program team. The AFOQT program page’s Contact us section currently lists 800-274-2602 (Americas, toll-free) and live chat.
A question you can send:
“For my AFOQT appointment at [test center] on [date], what are the rules for personal, center-supplied, or on-screen calculators, and what scratch materials will be provided?”
Keep the appointment-specific reply with your test-day instructions. A rule for one location or delivery format should not be assumed to apply to every appointment.
