What is the AFOQT Instrument Comprehension subtest?

Instrument Comprehension measures your ability to read two cockpit instruments — the compass (heading) and the artificial horizon (bank and pitch) — and determine an aircraft's attitude and direction. On the official AFOQT it has 25 questions in 5 minutes (about 12 seconds per question), and it feeds the Pilot composite.

How the questions work

Each item shows two dials and four silhouettes of airplanes in flight. Your job is to pick the one airplane that is most nearly in the position indicated by the two dials. You read the compass to get the direction the plane is heading, then read the artificial horizon to get its bank (wings level, banking left/right) and climb/dive, and match all of that to one of the four pictures.

Timing

At ~12 seconds per item there's just enough time to read both dials once and match — not to second-guess. As with every AFOQT subtest, there is no penalty for guessing, so mark an answer on every question.

How to improve

  • Split each dial into one job: compass = which way it's pointing, artificial horizon = wings and nose. Read them in the same order every time.
  • On the horizon, decide bank first (which wing is down) then pitch (nose up/level/down) — most wrong answers differ on bank.
  • Learn to read the silhouettes fast: identify the aircraft's heading and bank from the picture, then match, rather than staring at the dials.
  • Build a fixed routine so it becomes automatic under the clock.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the plane's heading with the direction it appears to turn.
  • Reversing left/right bank when translating the dial to the silhouette.
  • Overthinking pitch when the deciding difference is bank.

Yes — it's part of the Pilot composite.

What AFOQT Lab offers (our practice set — honest)

AFOQT Lab's Instrument Comprehension trainer generates instrument problems procedurally (compass + artificial horizon rendered as clean SVG dials), on a live timer at the real subtest's pace, with instant scoring. Session length is configurable rather than a fixed bank.

Question count and timing reviewed: 2026-10-05.

Bank direction and auxiliary-view limitations reviewed: 2026-10-07. These are scoped checks, not a claim that all page content was re-reviewed on either date.

Current question count and timing were reviewed against Pearson VUE. The older official Air Force practice pamphlet is used only for the two-instrument format and north-facing observer frame, not for its outdated timing schedule. The original airplane graphics use a 22° auxiliary projection, not the pamphlet's same-altitude view; do not infer pitch from nose position relative to the image center. Bank direction was reviewed against Part 5 on October 7, 2026. Practice questions are original and generated by AFOQT Lab; we are not affiliated with the U.S. Air Force.
