AFOQT Table Reading Tips: Improve Speed and Accuracy
Table Reading is a coordinate-location problem under severe time pressure. Pearson VUE currently lists 40 questions in 7 minutes—about 10.5 seconds per item. Most misses come from drifting into the wrong row, swapping X and Y, or hesitating long enough that speed collapses. The fix is a single scan pattern you can repeat without improvising.
Read X first
Say the column value silently and move your eyes to that column.
Hold the column
Keep your eyes on the same vertical line while you locate Y.
Read once and move
Choose the intersection value; do not restart the scan unless the coordinate was misread.
A worked coordinate example
Use the original table below. X labels run across the top; Y labels run down the left. For X = −1, Y = 2, find the −1 column first, keep that column anchored, and move to row 2. The intersection is 47.
| Y \ X | -2 | -1 | 0 | 1 | 2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 18 | 47 | 32 | 65 | 91 |
| 1 | 74 | 26 | 59 | 13 | 88 |
| 0 | 41 | 83 | 35 | 72 | 20 |
| -1 | 96 | 54 | 11 | 68 | 37 |
| -2 | 29 | 77 | 44 | 15 | 62 |
- Column: locate −1 across the X header.
- Row: locate 2 in the Y labels without leaving that column.
- Intersection: choose 47 and move to the next item.
Negative coordinates and the row-column trap
The minus sign belongs to the coordinate, not the table value. For X = 2, Y = −1, use column 2 and row −1. The answer is 37. If you reverse the coordinates and look at X = −1, Y = 2, you get 47 instead. That different but plausible value is exactly why an X-first routine matters.
Five original practice questions
Use the same table above. Work X first, then Y. Answers and explanations are directly below each item.
1. What value is at X = -2, Y = -2?
A. 18 · B. 29 · C. 41 · D. 74 · E. 96
Show answer and explanation
Answer: 29. Hold the X = −2 column, move to the Y = −2 row, and read 29 at the intersection.
2. What value is at X = 1, Y = 1?
A. 13 · B. 15 · C. 26 · D. 65 · E. 72
Show answer and explanation
Answer: 13. The X = 1 column and Y = 1 row meet at 13.
3. What value is at X = 0, Y = -1?
A. 11 · B. 32 · C. 35 · D. 44 · E. 59
Show answer and explanation
Answer: 11. Start at the X = 0 column; the Y = −1 row contains 11 in that column.
4. What value is at X = 2, Y = 0?
A. 20 · B. 35 · C. 37 · D. 72 · E. 88
Show answer and explanation
Answer: 20. The far-right X = 2 column crosses the Y = 0 row at 20.
5. What value is at X = -1, Y = 1?
A. 26 · B. 47 · C. 54 · D. 74 · E. 83
Show answer and explanation
Answer: 26. The X = −1 column and Y = 1 row meet at 26; 47 is the transposed-sign trap at Y = 2.
Turn the scan pattern into a reflex
Start untimed in Learn mode. Keep the same X-then-Y motion until it feels automatic, then move to a timed speed drill.
